Darien, Georgia: Harris Neck National Wildlife Refuge

Wood Storks

Endangered wood storks (Mycteria americana)

The very spirit of the Lowcountry is alive in every lush corner of Harris Neck Wildlife Refuge, a must-see for any Georgia coast traveler with a love of nature. Here the sea breeze rustles through grass as tall as a man’s head and egrets hunch on old snags that spike out of brackish pools. Grey-green moss drips from live oaks, and gators glide through green-grey waters. Land becomes indistinct from water, and life rustles, feeds, prowls and preens all around.

The 2,800-acre refuge is one of seven along the South Carolina and Georgia coasts, and holds a special place in the hearts of birders. The varied habitat of saltwater marsh, grassland, deciduous woods, and former crop land makes Harris Neck a favorite spot for a stunning variety of wintering and migrating birds. Thousands of wading birds nest here, including the stately and endangered wood stork, as well as ibises, herons and the distinctive anhinga. Among the summertime migrants is the brilliantly-colored and much-sought-after Painted bunting, and the winter brings more than a dozen waterfowl to Harris Neck’s marshes.

Harris Neck Wildlife Refuge MapFifteen miles of paved roads and trails make it easy to explore the marvels of Georgia’s varied coastal habitats within Harris Neck refuge for folks of all mobility levels. Guided tours are available through private outfitters, and offer insight into the complex ecosystem of the salt marshes, the unique adaptations of flora and fauna in the coastal forests, or customized birding excursions.

The refuge is hopping (or rather, squawking, flapping and chirping) year-round, but spring and fall offer the nicest weather for visiting. (Be sure to bring your bug repellant, particularly in summer). In mid-October, visitors with a real thirst for knowledge about the land and creatures of the Georgia coast can participate in the Georgia’s Colonial Coast Birding and Nature festival, a weekend packed with seminars, nature walks, and family activities throughout the Golden Isles and surrounding areas, including Harris Neck refuge.

The refuge is an easy car trip from Darien, just about 20 miles north on I-95, then about seven miles east. It is open seven days a week, free of charge, but portions of the refuge may be periodically closed to visitors to provide additional protection for nesting birds or other wildlife. Visit www.fws.gov/harrisneck for more information.
