Darien City Service (Water, Sewer, & Trash)

(As of March 20, 2009)

Darien Public Works: 437-6469 (M – Thurs, 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.)

Trash

The City provides Darien residents curbside trash collection service twice a week and hauls it to the county landfill. The cost of service is included in the water bill and is NOT optional. Trash pickup begins at 6:00 a.m.; so put garbage cans out early in the morning or the night before. For questions, call 437-6469.

Household trash – Use plastic bags, tie the tops, and put them in City-provided garbage cans next to the street. Do not put yard waste or building materials in City trash cans.

 

Yard waste – Use plastic bags, tie the top, and stack them next to the street. Put limbs & branches in a separate pile.

 

Junk Pickup is 3rd Wednesday – This includes large items, appliances, sofas, metal, and small pieces of wood. Put each in a separate pile next to the street and call 437-6469 to schedule pickup. (City does NOT pickup tires, batteries, chemicals, paints, or other hazardous materials. City does NOT remove building construction, improvement or demolition debris. Contractors and landscapers are responsible for removing their own debris.)

 

Water

No water service connections or disconnects on Fridays.

Junk Cars & Scrap Metal

Help is just a phone call away. Many salvage yards will remove derelict vehicles for you at no cost; and some pay for them. Most ask for the car title or require a signed bill of sale. Many will also remove scrap metal, batteries, and other recyclable trash. Companies that will help Darien residents at no cost include:

Ponsell’s Towing & Recovery – 437-3650 – Remove cars.

 

Frank Waye – 571-6961 – Remove cars, appliances, metal, batteries, etc.

 

Mitchell’s Body Shop/J&M Salvage – 466-8844 or 265-2093. – Remove cars, appliances, batteries, metal, cans, copper, aluminum siding, etc.

 

Owens Auto Junk Yard – David Owens – 269-6959 – Remove cars.

 

Jimmy Neesmith – 437-6823/266-1733 – Remove cars.

 

Butler Supply, Hwy 17 North Darien – 437-4219 - Buys used car batteries at store.

 

McIntosh County Landfill

McIntosh County Landfill is open Monday thru Saturday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is closed Sundays and Holidays. 832-6155. From Darien, travel north 8 miles on Hwy 17; turn left on Churchill Road and travel 3 miles to landfill. Residents of Darien and McIntosh County can dump personal items, metal and concrete for free; but there are Fees charged for tires:

Car tires w/o rims $ 1.50

With rims $ 3.00

Semi-truck tires w/o rims $ 6.50

With rims $ 14.00

Larger tires $ 18.00


Oyster Shells

Oyster Shells can be dropped off anytime in the fenced area on the south end of Williamson Park. It is located 2 ½ miles south of downtown Darien at the US Hwy 17 Bridge over the Champney River. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources recycles these shells by using them to replenish oyster beds.
